Your Only Anti-Aging Product: SPF

As someone who spends her days looking at skin under a magnifying lamp, I’m going to give it to you straight: Sunscreen is the only true "anti-aging" product in existence. Everything else is just damage control. If you’re investing in facials or acupuncture but skipping the SPF, you’re essentially lighting your money on fire.

Let’s break down the "why" and the "which" so you can protect that beautiful face of yours.

Text: "Why SPF: I like to appeal to both sides of the brain here—the part that wants to stay healthy and the part that wants to look 29 forever. 1. Your Health, 2 Your Appearance" And a photo of a woman applying plant based, luxury sunscreen

  • For your Health: Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US. Period. UV rays damage the DNA in your skin cells. SPF is your literal suit of armor.

  • For your Appearance: About 80% to 90% of visible skin aging—think leathery texture, "age" spots, and those fine lines that start to look like deep valleys—is caused by UV exposure. You don't have a "wrinkle" problem; you likely have a cumulative sun damage problem.

I get asked this at least five times a day. Neither is "better" in a vacuum; it’s about which one fits your lifestyle and skin type.

Comparison between mineral and chemical spa. Mineral is best for sensitive skin, rosacea. Chemical is seamless, best for athletes and under makeup. Also some information about how they work.

Don’t Know Which Products to Choose?

Here are my Picks:

1. The "French Pharmacy" Legend: La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Tinted Sunscreen SPF 50

Move over "IT Girl," La Roche-Posay is the "Parisian Editor" who has used the same flawless formula for decades. This is the gold standard for people who want the protection of a mineral block without looking like they’ve painted their face with white chalk.

  • Type: 100% Mineral (Titanium Dioxide).

  • The Vibe: It’s an ultra-light, shaking-bottle fluid. It has a sheer, universal tint that gives you that "I just woke up with perfect skin" glow, effectively replacing your light-coverage foundation on good skin days.

2. The "Gold Standard" Choice: EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46

If you look in the cabinet of any dermatologist (or acupuncturist!), you’ll likely find this. It is arguably the most recommended sunscreen on the planet for a reason.

  • Type: Hybrid (Zinc Oxide + Octinoxate).

  • The Vibe: It’s specifically formulated for skin prone to acne, rosacea, and hyperpigmentation.

3. The "Invisible" Choice: Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 50

This changed the game for everyone who refused to wear SPF because of the "white mask" look. It’s a total fan favorite for a reason.

  • Type: Chemical.

  • The Vibe: Completely clear, scentless, and feels like a weightless velvet primer.

We all have to start somewhere. <3

Pro-Tips (The "No-Excuses" Edition)

The "Two-Finger" Rule: You need more than you think. Squeeze two strips of sunscreen down your index and middle fingers. That is the minimum amount for your face and neck.

  • Don't Forget the "Necklace": Your neck and chest (the décolletage) age faster than your face because the skin is thinner. Treat them like an extension of your face.

  • Windows Count: UVA rays (the "Aging" rays) go right through glass. If you sit by a window at work or drive a car, you’re getting exposed.

  • Reapplication is Key: If you applied it at 8:00 AM, it’s gone by lunchtime. Keep a powdered SPF or a spray in your bag for touch-ups.

The Bottom Line

The best sunscreen in the world is the one you actually like wearing. If it feels gross, you won't use it. Spend the money to find a formula that feels like a nice moisturizer so you don't dread this step.

Think of SPF as your daily "insurance policy" for all the other work we do in the treatment room.
