Skin Care Routine? I don’t even know her…
If you’ve ever sat in my treatment room while I’m placing tiny needles in your face and you ask, “Okay but what should I actually be doing at home?”—this one’s for you.
Think of your skincare routine like your daily check-in with your body. It’s not about chasing perfection or 20-step routines—it’s about consistency, intention, and giving your skin what it actually needs to function well. Glowy skin isn’t just luck… it’s good habits stacked over time.
Let’s walk through it together, step by step, like I’m standing in your bathroom with you ☺️
Step 1: Cleanser – Your Reset Button
This is where everything begins. Cleansing removes dirt, oil, makeup, and environmental buildup from the day (or night). But more importantly, it preps your skin to actually receive everything else.
Look for:
Gentle surfactants that cleanse without stripping
Hydrating ingredients like glycerin or aloe
If your skin feels tight after cleansing, that’s not “clean”—that’s stressed. We don’t want that.
Step 2: Toner or Essence – The Prep Step
This step is like opening the door for hydration. It balances your skin’s pH and gives a light layer of moisture so everything that follows absorbs better.
Look for:
Hyaluronic acid for hydration
Rose water or green tea for calming
Fermented ingredients for nourishment and barrier support
Think of this as your “softening” step—skin should feel plump, not squeaky.
Step 3: Serums – Where the Magic Happens
This is your targeted treatment step. Serums are concentrated and designed to actually do something.
Here’s your cheat sheet:
Vitamin C (morning): Brightens, evens tone, supports collagen, protects from environmental stress
Niacinamide: Reduces redness, balances oil, strengthens the skin barrier
Hyaluronic acid: Deep hydration and plumping
Retinol (night): Encourages cell turnover, smooths fine lines, supports collagen (start slow!)
This is where we get results—but also where people tend to overdo it. You don’t need everything at once.
Step 4: Moisturizer – Seal It In
Moisturizer is not optional. Even if you’re oily. Especially if you’re oily.
This step locks in hydration and supports your skin barrier, which is everything when it comes to long-term skin health.
Look for:
Ceramides: Repair and protect the barrier
Peptides: Support elasticity and firmness
Squalene or jojoba oil: Mimic natural skin oils
Healthy skin = strong barrier. No shortcuts here.
Step 5: SPF (Morning Only, Non-Negotiable)
If you do nothing else… please do this.
Sun exposure is the number one cause of premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and collagen breakdown. You can have the fanciest serums in the world, but without SPF, you’re undoing all your progress.
Look for:
Broad spectrum protection (UVA + UVB)
At least SPF 30
Zinc oxide if you want a gentle, skin-friendly option
Yes, even when it’s cloudy. Yes, even if you “won’t be outside much.”
Why Order Matters (Don’t Skip This Part)
Your routine works because of the order, not just the products.
General rule:
Thinnest → thickest
Cleanser
Toner/essence
Serums
Moisturizer
SPF
If you put a thick cream on before a serum, you’re basically blocking it from doing its job. Think of layering like acupuncture—each step builds on the last to create flow and balance.
The Bigger Picture (Big Sister Talk 💛)
As a cosmetic acupuncturist, I don’t see skin as something separate from the body. Your glow comes from circulation, hydration, nervous system balance, and how well your body is functioning as a whole.
Your skincare routine? It’s a daily ritual that reinforces that wellness.
It’s you saying:
“I take care of myself. I pay attention. I’m worth the effort.”
So keep it simple. Stay consistent. Don’t chase every trend.
And remember—glow isn’t just what you put on your skin. It’s how you support it from within, every single day!
