Let’s Talk Cleansers (Because This Step Makes or Breaks Your Skin)
If your skin has been feeling off—too dry, too oily, breaking out, randomly irritated—I’m going to lovingly point you back to your cleanser.
I know. It seems basic. But as a cosmetic acupuncturist, I can tell you this is foundational. If this step is off, everything you put on after has to work twice as hard.
So let’s get into what your cleanser is actually doing (and what it should not be doing).

What a Cleanser Is Supposed to Do
But here’s the key: it needs to do all of that without disrupting your skin barrier.
Your skin has something called an acid mantle—a slightly acidic protective layer (pH ~5–5.5) that keeps harmful bacteria out and hydration in. The wrong cleanser can throw this completely out of balance.
Let’s Get a Little Nerdy: Surfactants
The reason cleansers work at all comes down to surfactants.
Surfactants are molecules with a split personality:
One end binds to oil
One end binds to water
This allows dirt and oil to rinse away when you wash your face.
But not all surfactants are created equal:
Gentle surfactants (like coco-glucoside) = cleanse without stripping
Harsh surfactants (like sodium lauryl sulfate) = disrupt your barrier, leading to dryness, irritation, and rebound oiliness
A well-formulated cleanser will also include:
Humectants (like glycerin) to prevent dehydration
Soothing ingredients (like aloe or chamomile) to calm inflammation
Skin Concerns This Targets
Oiliness & acne: Removes buildup without triggering more oil production
Dryness: Protects natural lipids so you’re not starting your routine already depleted
Sensitivity & redness: Minimizes irritation and inflammation triggers
Gentle Cleansers That Won’t Wreck Your Skin Barrier
When someone tells me their skin suddenly feels tight, flaky, or reactive, the first thing I look at is their cleanser—because the wrong face wash can quietly undo all the good work your serums and moisturizers are doing.
La Roche‑Posay Lipikar AP+ Gentle Foaming Cleansing Oil — This is the cleanser I recommend for dry or sensitive skin because the oil-to-foam texture removes dirt without stripping and actually leaves your face feeling hydrated instead of squeaky clean.
Fresh Soy Face Cleanser — A classic gentle gel cleanser that uses soy proteins and soothing ingredients to wash away makeup and impurities while keeping skin soft and balanced.
COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser — This lightweight gel cleanser keeps your skin at a healthy slightly acidic pH while gently removing oil and buildup so your barrier stays calm and balanced.
Big Sister Reality Check 💛
If your skin feels tight, squeaky, or “super clean” after washing… that’s not a win.
That’s your skin barrier saying, “Hey, we lost more than we should have.”
We want balanced. Soft. Comfortable.
Because cleansing isn’t just about removing the day—it’s about preparing your skin to receive care.
