Can Microneedling Erase My Acne Scars?

Microneedling is one of my favorite treatments for acne scars. While acupuncture works internally, treating the causes of acne and supporting your skin’s regeneration, microneedling allows us to directly stimulate the skin’s natural healing response in a precise and powerful way.

Combine that with the right skincare for your skin and an overall healthy diet and lifestyle, microneedling can significantly soften acne scars and improve overall skin texture.

Understanding Acne Scars

Scarring from acne forms when inflammation damages the deeper layers of the skin. As the body heals, it produces collagen to repair the injury. If too little collagen is produced, depressed or “atrophic” scars form — these are the pitted or indented scars many people struggle with. Alternately, the body may choose to produce too much collagen creating raised scars.

By the time acne has resolved, the inflammation may be gone, but the uneven collagen structure remains. This is where microneedling can make a meaningful difference.

How Microneedling Works

Microneedling, sometimes called collagen induction therapy, uses very fine, sterile needles to create controlled micro-injuries or micro-channels in the skin. These micro-channels are tiny — just enough to stimulate the body’s natural wound-healing cascade without causing significant damage.

When the skin senses these micro-injuries, it responds by:

  • Increasing blood flow to the area

  • Releasing growth factors

  • Stimulating fibroblasts (the cells responsible for collagen production)

  • Producing new collagen and elastin

Over time, this new collagen helps fill in depressed scars and smooth uneven texture. The skin becomes firmer, more even, and more resilient.

How This Aligns with Chinese Medicine

In Chinese medicine, acne scarring often reflects lingering stagnation — of Qi and Blood — in the skin’s superficial layers. Microneedling improves microcirculation which encourages flow in the tissues, allowing the body to flush out the stagnation.

When I treat acne scars, I combine microneedling with acupuncture points that support digestion, reduce inflammation, and regulate hormones. Healthy skin starts internally. By addressing both the root (internal imbalances) and the branch (the scar itself), we see more comprehensive and lasting results.

What to Expect From Treatment

Most patients need a series of 3-6 treatments, typically spaced about 4–6 weeks apart. Collagen remodeling takes time, so improvement happens gradually. After each session, the skin may appear pink or slightly flushed for 24–72 hours — similar to a mild sunburn — and without appropriate products which we will discuss during consultation, it may feel dry or flaky as it heals.

Over the course of treatment, patients often notice:

  • Softer, shallower scars

  • Improved skin tone and brightness

  • Smoother overall texture

  • Reduced pore size

Consistency is key. Because we are working with your body’s natural healing mechanisms, results build progressively.

Is Microneedling Safe?

When performed by a properly trained and licensed practitioner, microneedling is very safe. Proper needle depth, sterile technique, and thorough medical and cosmetic history are essential. Active acne, certain medications, or specific medical conditions may require postponing treatment.

This is why a consultation is always the first step.

Make it A Holistic Perspective on Skin Healing

Acne scars can impact confidence and emotional well-being long after breakouts have cleared. What I appreciate most about microneedling is that it respects the body’s wisdom. We are not forcing the skin to change — we are inviting it to regenerate.

In my practice, the most transformative results happen when external treatments like microneedling and appropriate skincare are paired with internal support through acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutrition, and lifestyle adjustments.

Skin reflects the state of the whole person. When we support both the surface and the system beneath it, true healing becomes possible.
